Opportunities for growth abound at LaGuardia, and staff in the Office of Transfer Services encourages
students to reach beyond their academic comfort zones and explore the four-year college experience by participating in summer transfer programs and overnight campus visits to private colleges.
Exploring Transfer–Vassar College
Since 1987, LaGuardia has been a partner in the Exploring Transfer
program at Vassar College. Exploring Transfer is designed to provide
an introduction to the intensive study of the liberal arts to community
college students who are pursuing associate degrees or certificates
in vocational, liberal arts, or science programs. Awarded a scholarship
that covers tuition, room, board, books, and all other
supplies, each student has the chance to focus solely on academic
pursuits without the distractions and worries of day-to-day life.
Three to five specially designed courses that match the expectations
for 100-level courses during the regular year are co-taught by a
Vassar professor and a community college professor; each course
is worth one unit of Vassar credit. By living in the residence halls,
students experience dormitory life, and are encouraged by program
counselors to form a learning community to promote intellectual
sharing and facilitate mutual academic and personal support. Barnard-LaGuardia Intercollegiate Partnership Summer Program
Now entering its eighteenth year, the Barnard-LaGuardia Intercollegiate
Partnership Summer Program (ICP) exposes LaGuardia students
who are interested in science to a rigorous but supportive sampling
of academic life at a premier four-year college. Each student receives
a scholarship that completely covers the cost and expenses of the
residential five-week program.
According to Barnard’s tracking data,
out of the 270 students who have passed through the ICP program,
196 have transferred to four-year colleges or universities or fouryear
health professions training programs. Classes are team-taught
by Barnard and LaGuardia faculty, and weekly workshops covering
such topics as time management and effective studying methods are
mandatory. Evening tutoring sessions, academic counseling and
weekly writing tutoring sessions are also offered.
